Fighting Deforestation
Mindanao was dramatically deforested through legal and illegal logging over several decades, until logging was banned five years ago. Today, Mindanao's landmass includes over 750,000 acres of barren, deforested land.
Ecological Benefits
Carbon Removal
Fast-growing bamboo pulls carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere as it matures.
Watershed Restoration
Replanting helps rebuild the watersheds that decades of logging stripped away.
Soil Stability
Bamboo root systems stay in the ground, holding soil and moisture in place.
Community Benefits
In 2020, One Tree Planted supported a pilot project planting 1,600 acres of bamboo in Mindanao. Cariloha is proud to support a program that creates new jobs collecting growing materials, running bamboo nurseries and planting bamboo. As a USAID co-funded program, special attention is paid to facilitating jobs for women.
